One of the goals for 2020 is to share our knowledge with students in the Netherlands and to demonstrate our skills during FIRST competitions in the USA. That is why we decided to participate in the ‘Los Angeles North Regional’ in Thousand Oaks, LA, California.
We were also preparing to travel to the Detroit Championship (end of April 2020) to defend our title as FIRST World Champion, because we became World Champion during the FRC Detroit Championship 2019.
2020 Infinite Recharge
The name of the 2020 game is ‘Infinite Recharge’: ‘This 2019-2020 season, FIRST RISES, powered by Star Wars: Force for Change, is setting out to inspire citizens of the galaxy to work together, strengthening and protecting the Force that binds us and creating a place where collaboration and collective wisdom can elevate new ideas and foster growth. Together, we RISE.‘
A group of 21 members of Team Rembrandts travelled to LA, with students from:
- Heerbeeck College in Best,
- Zwijsen College in Veghel,
- Fontys Engineering inEindhoven
- TU/e inEindhoven
- Avans in ‘s-Hertogenbosch

California here we come!
We arrived a few days early before the competition, to explore some parts of California. For ‘serious fun’ we went to Universal Studios and the Science Centre in LA. The nature in California is beautiful so we went to walk on Malibu beach, we took a boot to the Channels Islands and we hiked to Malibu Creek Rock Pool. That was very nice!
LA North Regional Thousand Oaks
During the competition we learned a lot, we met some wonderful robotics teams from LA and San Diego in California, but also from Hawaii and Taiwan. We really made some new friends! And last but not least, we won two awards.
Awards Ceremony
During the awards ceremony we received two Award:
- Team Spirit Award sponsored by FCA Foundation
- FIRST Dean’s List Finalist Award (awarded to team member Rens Kappert)
About the Team Spirit Award
This is what the judges had to say:
“This team was noticeably enthusiastic throughout the competition. Their bright t-shirts, frequent team chants, and face paint – reflective of their favorite artist – brought smiles to everyone’s faces.”
Overall ranking
Above expectations, we managed to get the 4th place in the ranking and therefore were able to become an alliance captain. Together with FIRST Team Paradox 2102 and Ellipse 6814 we won the quarterfinal matches. Unfortunately, we got eliminated in the semifinals.
Here a small recaps of the Los Angeles North Regional:
2020 FIRST season is suspended
Due to the Corona virus the 2020 FIRST season is suspended and the Championship events in Houston and Detroit are cancelled.
We look forward to season 2021!
